Shock wave

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy in horses

The Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a modern, non-invasive treatment method that has become established in equine medicine. It uses high-energy sound waves that are directed specifically into the diseased tissue to promote healing processes and alleviate pain.

Areas of application

Shock wave therapy is particularly suitable for diseases of the musculoskeletal system, such as

  • Tendon and ligament injuries (e.g. pastern origin, deep flexor tendon)
  • Attachment inflammation of muscles and tendons
  • Chronic back pain
  • Bursitis

Mode of action

The shock waves stimulate the metabolism and blood circulation in the treated area. This leads to

  • Pain reduction: The sound waves influence the transmission of pain and have a soothing effect.
  • Accelerated healing: Repair mechanisms in the tissue are activated and regeneration is supported.
  • Improvement of mobility: By reducing pain and inflammation, the horse can move more freely again.

Procedure of the treatment

The therapy is usually carried out on an outpatient basis. The horse is sedated to enable stress-free treatment. The shock waves are directed into the affected tissue using a handpiece. A session usually only lasts a few minutes; depending on the disease, several treatments at intervals of two to three weeks are advisable.

Advantages for your horse

  • Gentle, non-invasive procedure
  • Well tolerated and virtually free of side effects
  • Effective supplement to other therapies
  • Suitable for acute and chronic diseases
