TSE

Tumour-Specific Electroporation (TSE) - Modern cancer therapy in horses

Equine sarcoids and other skin tumours pose a particular challenge in equine medicine. They can grow aggressively locally, are prone to recurrence and are often difficult to treat. With the Tumour-Specific Electroporation (TSE) is an innovative form of therapy that has a targeted and tissue-sparing effect.

What is TSE?

The TSE is a combination of targeted electrical impulses and a locally applied Low-dose chemotherapy. The electrical impulses cause the cell membranes of the tumour cells to open temporarily („electroporation“). This allows the medication to penetrate the tumour cells directly and highly effectively, while the surrounding healthy tissue is largely spared.

Advantages of TSE therapy

  • Targeted effect: The drugs take effect directly in the tumour cells.
  • Gentle on the organism: As only small amounts of active ingredients are required, the rest of the body is hardly affected.
  • High effectiveness: A significant reduction in the relapse rate was observed, particularly in equine sarcoids.
  • Minimally invasive: The procedure usually only requires sedation and local measures, not major surgery.
  • Short healing time: Less tissue damage means faster regeneration.

Areas of application

TSE therapy is particularly suitable for:

  • Equine sarcoids in various localisations
  • Other skin tumours of the horse, e.g. squamous cell carcinoma
  • Recurrences after surgical removal, where tumour regrowth is to be prevented

Procedure of the treatment

After light sedation, the medication is injected directly into the tumour. Short electrical impulses are then conducted into the tissue via special electrodes. This procedure only takes a few minutes and is painless for the horse. Depending on the size and type of tumour, several sessions may be necessary.
