Orthopaedics

Orthopaedics is one of the main areas of veterinary specialisation at our clinic. It includes the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system such as lameness, back problems, rideability problems and limb malpositions. The examination always begins with a thorough clinical assessment of the patient. We also have an objective gait analysis using artificial intelligence (AI) at our disposal. This movement analysis can be used to better visualise unclear lameness, but also to document rehabilitation progress. For this purpose, the horse's movement is filmed using the Sleip app and the asymmetries of the movement are then calculated with an accuracy of 2 mm. To make a diagnosis, we use various modern imaging techniques such as Digital X-rayUltrasoundScintigraphy, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Computed tomography (CT) available.

Therapeutically, the clinic offers a wide range of modern, tried and tested treatment concepts. These include joint injections, ultrasound-guided tendon and joint injections, shock wave therapy, cryotherapy and treatment with regenerative medicine (IRAP, PRP, PRF, ACP, stem cells). In collaboration with farrier Max Kase, we also offer customised orthopaedic shoeing during the patient's stay at the clinic.

The orthopaedic Surgery is another focus of our clinical activities. In addition to Arthroscopy and tendovaginoscopy the surgical treatment of fractures (osteosynthesis), misalignments and injuries.

Back problems and rideability problems

Many rideability problems are caused by the horse's spine. An examination for such problems very often also requires the patient to be presented under the (permanent) rider and, if necessary, an outside rider. A thorough clinical examination provides the vet with important information and determines the further course of action. A radiological examination of the spine is usually necessary. In addition, the Scintigraphy often provide valuable diagnostic information for findings in the neck and back area that are not visible or cannot be visualised by X-ray.

Depending on the results of these examinations, targeted treatment can then be carried out using localised, sometimes ultrasound-guided injections or shock wave therapy. Chiropractic is used in many cases for both diagnosis and treatment. In addition to veterinary treatment, a special exercise programme with targeted gymnastic work is very often necessary for successful treatment. In this case, our vets will put together an individually adapted and sensibly coordinated training programme for you and your horse.

Limb deformities

Acquired and congenital limb malpositions (buck-hoofed, stubbed, sinewy, bow-legged, knock-kneed, etc.) play a particularly important role in foals. Especially at foal age, there is still the possibility of exerting a lasting influence on such positional anomalies.

X-rays are used to assess the prospects of recovery and to evaluate the healing process. The therapy depends on the type and extent of the symptoms. Various orthopaedic measures such as hoof boots, splints, support bandages, shock wave therapy and medication are available.

In severe cases, surgery is unavoidable. Our frequently used and proven surgical techniques include periosteal lifting, cutting of supporting ligaments and the use of screws to inhibit growth on one side.
