Eye diseases and injuries in horses deserve special attention at all times. Recurring complaints should be thoroughly investigated, as even mild initial symptoms can quickly worsen and impair your horse's vision - in the worst case, there is a risk of losing the eye.
We offer in-depth diagnostics which, in addition to the clinical ophthalmoscopic examination of the anterior and posterior parts of the eye, may also include the removal and examination of samples and an ultrasound examination.
If the back of the eye cannot be seen due to a constriction of the pupil or an opacity in the area of the cornea or lens, ultrasound still allows us to assess this region. Any foreign bodies or injuries or growths in the area of the bony eye socket (orbit) can also be visualised with the help of ultrasound.
In addition to diagnostics, our spectrum includes conservative and surgical treatment of eye patients, depending on the severity of the disease.
Conservative therapy focusses on the treatment of corneal injuries or corneal defects. In the case of infected corneal injuries, intensive ointment treatment (initially every 2 hours) is necessary to prevent a possible breakthrough into the anterior chamber of the eye and the associated loss of the eye. In severely painful or uncooperative patients, medication can also be administered via a subpalpebral lavage catheter inserted into the upper eyelid. We also offer conservative treatment for immune-mediated keratitis, periodic ocular inflammation and glaucoma.
